It took me years of searching and preparation to finally make this capture. First came the vision—I had to imagine the photograph before I could ever find it. Then came the work of improving my camera skills, learning to truly see, and most importantly, being present at the right place and the right time.

Even on the day itself, I had to move carefully. How do you decide on exposure during a partially cloudy afternoon, when the light shifts from moment to moment? Digital cameras behave so differently than film—it is not as simple as it once was. In the end, two images were blended together, carefully chosen to overcome the effects of wind and to bring out just the best spots.

This photograph was created at McArthur Burney Falls State Park. The park itself is lovely, but this particular subject lies a bit downstream, quietly waiting to be seen.
