Winter Sunrise in the Owens Valley

Winter Sunrise in the Owens Valley

I am in my office thinking about the month of January 2021. It was a great month for me and my camera. There were two great captures! Photographs that took effort and imagination from me to get right. And I am wondering where February will lead me too!

But back to January. This is an iconic scene for photographers of the West, but relatively unknown to the public. I decided that I would do it as well as possible for my clientele. I visited the area on four different occasions last month, once to be sure I had the exact spot, another at sunset, and once more in blue hour. I was really after something different. But in the end dawn was best. I waited for just the perfect conditions, and waited some more, hoping for a giant storm later in January, it came to be, 84 inches in the town of Mammoth, and 110 inches on the Mountain! I captured the usual image, and stopped to ponder in my mind, that the Owens River was always too dominant in images that I had previously perused. It made a forced composition. The answer was a pano! I love how the capture reveals a larger sweep of the Sierra Nevada. And a hint of the river. The huge snow was perfect. I found a different photograph. Here is the normal version too.
