An earlier visit to this scene was at a time of very harsh morning light. By harsh, I mean very bright sunlit highlights and deep dark shadows. This time, however, the bougainvilleas were brighter and in better bloom. The sun had just set over the western mountains, leaving us with an even, flat luminescent light. The scene intrigues me because of the flowers and the partially opened doorway leading to a mysterious inner courtyard. For years I was on the outside looking in and had to only wonder until I eventually met the owner. It remained a curiosity for a long time before I began shooting. This curiosity remains as part of the image for me.
