I have worked this location many times. It seems like every earlier effort was "lacking" in these later years of my career. It took the amazing flexibility of modern digital cameras to finally find a great capture. There are no film costs, and one has instant feedback. With digital cameras one can change your shooting location over and over, and obtain just the correct exposure. I went back over a two year period in different light conditions, and finally settled on day with a clearing autumn storm.  Many of my best images the last few years have been obtained with repeated trips to a certain spot in different types of light. After I find that light, then I can locate the correct composition, and then "my feelings in the right side of my brains, that I want to present" are correctly captured. A slippery concept…
