I made this image early in the summer. I was quietly walking back to camp, looking for interesting compositions—or perhaps just enjoying a peaceful, meditative stroll.

This pond caught my eye. The lone lodgepole pine and its perfect reflection immediately stood out.

I had tried photographing the scene in the morning, but it wasn't quite right. The rising sun created bright hot spots that distracted from the quiet beauty of the pond. One day, I returned just after 5:00 in the afternoon. As I glanced to my left, the creative side of my brain simply said, "Yes."

I walked over, set up my camera, and made the exposure.
