Just off the beaten path of the Mountaineers Route to Mount Whitney lies this beautiful little lake, where our family spent two nights while climbing the East Face of Whitney and the Clyde Route on Mount Russell. Because of wind both mornings, I was unable to photograph the reflection of Whitney, but I discovered this intriguing pouroff just below the lake. The sun rises far to the north at the time of the summer solstice, and it unexpectedly and suddenly popped above and around a high moraine to my east, making this a very tricky setup with just seconds to make the exposure. If you look closely, you can see my shadow in the left-center of the image!
